At the State Library of Iowa, we say yes! Trustees can and should play a key role in fostering a culture of learning at their libraries—beginning with themselves. When library boards embrace a learning culture, they become more receptive to supporting continuing education, in policy, planning, and budgeting. This webinar presents ideas for growing board learning into a blossoming culture that motivates board members to see education and training as a natural part of their trusteeship.

This webinar is hosted in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries.

Voter Perceptions of Libraries: Getting from Awareness to Funding in 2018

In 2008, OCLC published From Awareness to Funding: A Study of Library Support in America, a study of the awareness, attitudes, and underlying motivations among US voters for supporting library funding. The research dispelled long-held assumptions and provided eye-opening insights about who supports public library funding and for what reasons. A decade later, OCLC has partnered with PLA and the ALA Office for Library Advocacy to investigate perceptions and support among US voters today, and how they may have shifted in the intervening years. In this session, presenters will share key findings and analysis from summary report (due to be released in late March); provide new details on library super supporters and probable supporters in context with other library trends and research; and kickstart the discussion on how library leaders and advocates can act on these findings.

This annual event brings together communities in support of the freedom to read and to express ideas, even those considered unorthodox or unpopular. Some libraries have been celebrating BBW for decades and feel like they are “preaching to the choir,” while others have steered clear of stirring up controversy. This free webinar from PLA and OIF will shine a light on these and other barriers to successful participation in BBW and will focus on solutions to keep your library’s involvement fresh, relevant, and meaningful to your community. REGISTER NOW!

Measures that Matter Part Two: Detailing the Data-based Story of Public Libraries

In the United States, there are a number of national surveys of public libraries and their patrons. While all of these efforts help us tell a data-based story of public libraries, they differ in terms of their samples, what types of data they collect, and how their data are collected, stored, and accessed. During the first webinar in this three-part series, we scanned the landscape of major public library surveys and considered how library data could be used more productively in the future. In this second webinar, we will drill deeper into the concepts of sampling, data types, and data management, and how they impact what we know about public libraries and their patrons. At the end of this webinar, participants will have a greater understanding of various sampling methods, recognize the differences between inputs, outputs, and outcomes, and be aware of the data management practices for various national public library surveys.

This webinar is the second in a three-part series about the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ and the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies’ Measures that Matter initiative, a field-wide discussion of the current state of public library data.
