White Pine Library Cooperative went through boxes that were kept for years and needed to eliminate a lot of the papers and dated information.
There are certain items that need to be kept for different amounts of time. We used the State of Michigan Records Retention and Disposal Schedule, General Schedule #17 – Public Libraries. This schedule defines how long records need to be retained to satisfy administrative, fiscal, legal, and historical requirements, and they specify if/when records can be destroyed.
